Friendly staff, but like any school, students must seek opportunities, they won't come to you on a silver platter
Awful college life. I'd like to summarize as quickly as possible how horrible my experience has been living on campus so that hopefully I can deter someone else from making the mistake of coming here.
On another note, if you are interested in partying at all, there is never anything going on on campus or in Gorham. If there is something going on, you can trust that the RA's and police will do everything they can to find it and bust it for "your own safety." And they'll slap you with a strike and a fine.
I would like to transfer to another school at the end of first semester, but their housing contract locks in you for a full year, and if you choose to leave you are still responsible for paying the entirety of it. Unfortunately as a college student, I'm not made of money, and neither are my parents, making that not an option until May.
During tours and accepted student days, they will put a nice plasma TV in the cafe. After its over, they take the TV's out. It seems to me they are deceiving prospective students, while giving their current students a slap in the face. Being well traveled, I do know that other cafeterias at other colleges are far better than this, even in this poor economy.
Margret Brownlee an adviser for all students believes in the racist term "white privilege", and thinks it is not racist to judge base on skin color and not ones life. The dean of students also agrees in the racist term "white privilege", and bases this on what he call his fear everyday that his son will be shot by the police officer. Police does not equal white as far as I know. The fact is the school has administrators who believe you can judge someone by the color of their skin. I would advise going to a school that does not employee racist thought on campus. The education as well is sub par at best!
I went to get a parking decal from the police station on campus, but my registration was up. So I was turned back, and I immediately went online to get my car registered. In the short period of time while I was waiting for my registration to come in the mail, the campus police ticketed my car 4 times, totaling $140. Once my registration finally came in the mail, I went to the police station again to try to get my decal. This time they told me that since I had outstanding parking tickets, they couldn't give me a decal until I paid them off. I told them my story and they told me to fill out an appeal form, so I did. In the mean time they gave me a 10 day parking pass. 16 days later, I have not been called, nor have I received any word on my appeal. I suppose it is only a matter of time before the police notice my temporary pass is expired and they begin ticketing me again. I tried to be proactive and go to the police station to ask them the status of my appeal, but they told me I had to call the parking garage in the morning. USM is obviously a school lacking organization and communication, and it looks to make additional money off its students by giving them parking tickets whenever they can get the chance. To me, the fact that I live on campus seems like it should be reason enough to not ticket my car when it is parked in the correct designated resident parking lot.
The funny part is that students living in the dorms this year has decreased by 10% and USM can't seem to figure out why. Heed my warning and just go somewhere else.
This college requires you to have a meal plan unless you live in the most expensive dorm room on campus. meal plans as of 2011-2012 cost $4,309.00 for 10 meals a week for a school year. For this price, you could spend 119 dollars a week on food for yourself. So USM's food must be pretty good with all the money they are getting from their students, right? Nope, actually couldn't be further from the truth. The food is consistently of poor quality, and is left out for too long. The variety is entirely underwhelming, as you'll most likely find yourself with the same choices day in and day out. They hire incompetent staff to work the cafe. Some of whom are so apathetic and/or unskilled, that if you simply wanted a sandwich, they would mess it up. To emphasize just how bad it is, I have lost 10 pounds in the last 5 days because I go to the cafe and have no healthy options to choose from and usually settle, and end up losing my appetite after a few bites.
